Well for one thing, Garcia only had nine fingers, which sort of puts him in a category of his own... Sort of like the saying "They're not the best at what they do"... I'm not aware of any other nine fingered guitarists, so that would make Jerry "the best". But then, there is that "Garcia Soul", something you are all touching on, but again, an indefinable something that I've never heard in anyone else!

I also agree with Brother Wolf about Kimock... He plays some shit that comes very close to that indefinable thing... Would love to here Jerry and Steve playing together... Anyone know if it ever happened?

OK, 'nuff for now...

:)

comparing kimock (who sends me to sleep every time i try to listen to skb) with jerry is ridiculous to say the least

the only 3 guitarist that could´ve been compared to jerry sailed away long ago - jimi hendrix, duane allman and john cipollina. i´m not talking about the guitar playing technique here, but about the spirit and the overall effect of the sound created. and yes, of course, jorma´s still around - well worth a comparison

jerry and kimock played together once only. it was the last cipollina´s gig w/ zero. pretty average show

jerry had nine fingers on his picking hand....not exactly the same as having nine fingers on your fretting hand......if you wanna hear the best guitar player with limited fingers...check out Django Reinhardt....he had his lindex and middle finger of his fretting hand fused together in a fire and still managed to be the most influential guitar player ever...jerry included

I never knew that about Django, and yes I am familiar with him, and yes again, that would be much more difficult...

I'm very tempted to go with the "nine fingers on either hand", but I know it's just a typo and going to resist...
